“The Truman Show“

Before my viewing of “The Truman Show”, I was under the impression that the film would be a reality Tv show about a man by the name Truman, this expectation was based off of what the title was implying to me. In the beginning of the film I was very lost. As a viewer I felt there was not enough context in the first half for me to get a complete picture and fully comprehend what was going on. I believe that the directors did this to create a sense of mystery. There were many hints throughout the first half that didn’t fully click in my brain until the plot was laid out more, that then made complete sense. One scene that stuck out to me was when Truman and Meryl are arguing and out of no where Meryl puts on a smile and starts to talk about ‘coco powder’ causing Truman to look around the room in confusion. After realizing halfway through the film that Trumans life and reality has all been a lie, it made me feel disoriented about my own life. It is crazy to believe that a film could make someone think so hard, this shows how well the writers did in the making of the film. One thought I had throughout my viewings was how extremely talented every actor in this film is. They all had to act like they were acting in a movie, especially the actor of Truman, Jim Carrey, having to pretend that he didn’t know everyone around him is acting towards him.  Some main moments that stuck to me are the many moments in which Meryl would ‘improvise’ how to respond to Truman when he started to realize what was going on. I also found it interesting the ways that Truman would test to see if things really were off in his town, as he presumed them to be. The thing that stuck out the very most to me was the fear of water they drilled into Trumans mind when he was a child, to assure he could not escape. I have never in the past focused so hard on analyzing a film, so this was a valuable learning experience for me. When I was younger I would pretend I was on camera and attempt to act ‘perfect’, so seeing the concept of this being someone’s reality was very interesting. Overall, I found the film very enjoyable, and loved the ways the creators made the angles it is viewed from.
