“Sherlock Holmes”

In the film “Sherlock Holmes” there was a lot of different mise- en- scène moments. For example the setting, the costumes, the lighting, and even the overall composition. One specific scene that stuck out to me in this film was about halfway through, when Sherlock Holmes and John Watson were saving Irene Adler. Holmes and Watson were searching for clues from a place Blackwood had been, and there they found Irene stuck going through a machine being used to sever deceased pig bodies.

In said scene, the lighting was dark and mysterious, the only lighting coming from fire being used to burn pigs bodies. The costumes that the characters are wearing help to further set the mood as well. The two detectives are wearing suits, Irene is wearing suspenders and looks like a victorian business woman, and in the few seconds we see Blackwood he is wearing the cape that he appears to wear very often throughout the film. Through the whole scene there are bodies and heads of deceased pigs surrounding the characters, setting the mood and giving me chills. They are also surrounded by flames, tools and machinery used to sever pig bodies. Another thing that really popped out to me and makes the scene is the camera movements. The way that the camera moves with the characters made me feel like I as there with them, helping to save Irene.

In the scene,Watson, Holmes and Irene sound and look scared of what is happening. Emotions are very high, especially from Irene who is just shy of death. Blackwood only appears for a second physically in this scene, but his voice is in the background a couple times. His voice sounds loud and mysterious, and had Holmes an Watson jumping and turning whenever he speaks. Another note on the actors performance in the scene is the body language. Holmes and Watson are running around trying to do whatever it will take to save Irene, while she is restrained in one place. She is chained up to a conveyor with dead pigs hanging around her. It is a little sickening to watch, but makes it much more suspenseful.

Overall, this scenes action grabbed my attention and really had me on the edge of my seat. I was surprised of how tightly Irene was chained and how quickly the detectives were able to save her. The execution of mise- en- scène helped to really pull everything in together and make us truly believe the actors were scared Irene would not make it out alive. The scenes action, body language and overall execution effectively conveyed the high stakes and heavy emotions making the audience truly believe the fear and urgency of the situation at hand.
